Uniworld River Cruises was established over 30 years ago. In 2006 Uniworld was purchased by Travel Corporation (the parent company of five-star luxury Red Carnation Hotels). Over the past few years Uniworld has been refurbishing its ships, making sure that they offer the best quality product to its customers.
Uniworld is well known for offering a truly top quality river cruising product. From their excellent service to their fine dining, Uniworld is definitely one of the top dogs in the river cruising world. Uniworld's ships can be found worldwide, sailing in the most famous rivers around. From the Yangtze and Black Sea to the Rhine and Danube, Uniworld reaches some of the most famous cities in the world.
Uniworld currently owns 9 of the ships in its fleet. The rest of the ships are either jointly operated by Uniworld and another company, chartered through other companies, or they just book space onto other ships. Uniworld makes sure that when using another company's ship/staff that the company being used shares the same standards of excellence in quality and service that Uniworld has. 7 of the river cruise ships that Uniworld books space onto are owned by Victoria Cruises. Victoria Cruises, established in 1994, is a New York-based river cruise company that sails its 5-star ships in China.
The newest ship in Uniworld's fleet is River Tosca, which debuted in September of 2009 and features Nile River cruises.
Uniworld currently offers over 500 departures, with over 30 different itineraries to choose from. In fact, Uniworld Grand River Cruises sails its ships in over 20 countries, on 12 different rivers. Besides their standard river cruise product, Uniworld also offers cruise/land packages for those looking to take their vacation packages to the next level. A Uniworld river cruise can be anywhere from a week long, all the way up to a month long (depending on the specific package purchased).
The following information pertains to the ships that Uniworld actually owns:
The interiors of the Uniworld-owned cruise ships are quite boutique-like. The decor of each ship reflects on the area in which the ship cruises in. The staff onboard each ship is 100% English-speaking, so language barriers are no problem for English-speaking travelers. In fact, all of the onboard announcements are made in English (regardless of destination). The onboard atmosphere is pretty casual, allowing for passengers to enjoy the surroundings and each other's company.
Each Uniworld-owned ship features a variety of special in-room amenities. These may include (based on the specific ship) terry-cloth robes, extra thick bath towels, fine wool/cashmere blended throws, European-style down comforters and duvets, a choice of pillows, and flat screen televisions. Standard staterooms onboard the Uniworld-owned ships average 154 square feet in size. Suites are about 230 square feet and feature additional amenities, including a sitting area with sofa and two chairs, spacious bathrooms with showers and tubs (on most ships). Staterooms are cleaned twice daily by the courteous staff.
The Uniworld-owned ships feature satellite telephone services, 24-hour front desk service, self-service laundry, fitness center, sauna,
dining room, panoramic lounge, sun deck, nightly entertainment and more. Onboard entertainment is often provided by local performers.
Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style. Dinner is served full service in a single open seating setup. The menus feature fresh local ingredients, with vegetarian entrees available. Afternoon tea is served in the lounge, along with desserts.
Passengers onboard Uniworld's ships come from a range of backgrounds. There will not be many children onboard, but some families do choose Uniworld
because of their unique itineraries and casual onboard atmosphere. In fact, Uniworld has recently announced a program geared toward family travel. Uniworld is particularly popular with well traveled adults, seeking something "different" from a typical mass market cruise. The stereotype of river cruising is that it's primarily an older crowd, but Uniworld continues to make efforts to attract a wide range of travelers.
The River Heritage Club is the past passenger program of Uniworld River Cruises. Membership benefits include exclusive discounts, stateroom upgrades, cocktail receptions and more. For more information about this program, view our River Heritage Club page.
There are currently 16 cruise ships in the Uniworld fleet, 9 of which are actually owned by Uniworld (the rest are chartered by them). 3 of the chartered ships (the ones that begin with the name Victoria) are chartered from Victoria Cruises, one of the more popular river cruise lines in China.
