Star Clippers was founded in 1989 when Swedish entrepreneur Mikael Krafft decided to create a modern cruise line that was dedicated to re-creating the golden age of tall sailing ships, while providing guests with a mega-yacht experience.
The Star Clippers fleet visits ports of call that larger cruise ships cannot reach, providing their passengers with the onboard atmosphere of a private yacht. The Star Clippers ships feature fine dining along with a high level of personal service. Being able to climb the mast for a better view is something quite unique on a cruise nowadays.
There are currently three ships in the Star Clipper fleet. Royal Clipper, which was launched in 2000, is the 5,000-ton flagship of the Star Clippers fleet. The other two (much smaller) ships in the Star Clippers fleet are Star Clipper and Star Flyer, a set of 2,298-ton sister ships that were launched in the early '90s (1992 and 1991, respectively).
Star Clippers recently announced plans to build a new five-masted vessel (yet to be named) that's expected to debut during the spring of 2011. At 7,400-tons and 518 feet in length, this ship will be the largest sailing ship ever built, with a capacity of 296 guests (based on double occupancy) and a crew of 140.
Royal Clipper spends the winter and spring in the Caribbean, repositioning to the Mediterranean for the summer and fall seasons. Star Clipper spends the winter and spring in the Far East, repositioning to the Mediterranean for the summer and fall seasons. Star Flyer sails year-round Tahiti cruises to the Society Islands and Tuamotu Atolls.
When on a Star Clippers ship you're sure to experience something very similar to being on a large yacht. There's great food, an attentive staff and a nice selection of activities to participate in. If you're looking for a huge ship or a rock-climbing wall, then a Star Clippers cruise is not for you. However, if you want a unique itinerary with a casually elegant cruising experience then a Star Clipper cruise might be the right choice for you!
Accommodations onboard the Star Clippers ships range from basic interior staterooms (double occupancy), all the way up to 200+ square foot Deluxe Suites (onboard Royal Clipper) or an Owner's Cabin (onboard Star Clipper and Star Flyer). All accommodations onboard Royal Clipper feature a television, direct-dial phone, individual thermostat control, private safe, hair dryer, keyless entry, 220 volt (European) outlets and nightly turn-down service. Most of the accommodations onboard Star Clipper and Star Flyer feature a television, direct-dial phone, individual thermostat control, private safe, hair dryer, keyless entry, 110 volt (American) outlets and nightly turn-down service. All of the Star Clippers ships feature handsome wooden furniture in yacht-like fashion, created by Donald Starkey of England.
Dining onboard each of the Star Clippers ships is in an open-seating format, with the ability to accommodate all officers and passengers at the same time. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style, while dinner is a sit-down event featuring regional and seasonal cuisine.
Complimentary snorkeling, sunfish sailing, banana boating, waterskiing and windsurfing is available on each of the Star Clippers ships (via the marina at the rear of the ship). Scuba diving is available for a fee and certification is required. Outdoor pools are located on the Sun Deck of each Star Clippers ship.
A couple of computers are available onboard each ship, for outgoing passenger e-mail and Internet.
