As we popped open a complimentary bottle of chilled champagne inside our Deluxe Verandah stateroom, I appreciated the spaciousness of the room and the ocean views. Since another family member reserved the room next door, our cabin steward opened the divider outside to allow us double the balcony space. "I could get used to this," excitedly exclaimed my husband.
Over the summer we cruised the Mediterranean with seven family members for a multi-generational cruise. We splurged and got two Deluxe Verandah suites on the Holland America ship, Noordam. We needed enough space for four adults, two teenagers and one child. Reserving a suite costs more, yet offers additional perks and benefits.
One of the first conveniences is priority boarding. We walked directly up to a separate check-in counter inside the cruise terminal. While masses of people waited in long lines to register and board the ship, a friendly representative looked at our passports, took our picture for our shipboard card, and directed us aboard.
Another benefit is the spacious stateroom with an extremely comfortable king-size bed, large sitting area, sofa bed, floor to ceiling windows, dressing area, tub and shower.
Exclusive privileges inside the Neptune Lounge enhanced our cruise. With a cruise carrying over 1850 passengers, it's nice to have a more intimate spot to go to relax in the library, socialize near the large screen television and enjoy the personalized service of a concierge. After two mornings of room service food, we ventured into the exclusive Neptune Lounge for delicious cappuccinos, café lattes, pastries and fresh fruit.
Since we traveled a few days before joining the ship, we had acquired some dirty laundry. Guests, who reserve a suite, get complimentary daily dry cleaning, pressing and laundry. As long as we gave our order to our steward in the morning, we had clean clothes the same evening, or by the next morning.
A nice surprise was delivered to us before the Captain's Welcome Dinner; red and white carnation corsages and boutonnières to enhance our formal wear.
Our suite was located next to the elevators for easy access to various decks. Was it worth the money? We think so. Especially when we didn't have to wait in line to disembark. We ate a tasty breakfast, closed our stateroom door and walked right off the ship.
