Peter Deilmann Cruises has closed their river cruise division as of 2010, citing financial difficulties as the cause for this change. Their sole "ocean fleet" vessel, MS Deutschland, will continue operating as planned. A new home for the ships formerly in Peter Deilmann Cruises' river cruise division has not been announced, as for now it seems that the ships will be dry-docked during 2010. It is being speculated, and is quite likely, that the river cruise ships will be sold off to another company.
Peter Deilmann Cruises is a small ship cruise line. This German, family-owned company has an award winning fleet of vessels throughout its history, offering cruises throughout the world. Among their awards are being voted to Condé Nast Traveler’s "Gold List" 6 out of 7 years, as well as being voted among the top 10 Best Small-Ship Cruise Lines by Travel & Leisure magazine in 2004, 2006, 2007 & 2008. This is all made possible by the fact that Peter Deilmann boasts one of the best passenger-to-crew ratios in the industry (2.5:1 on their river ships and 2:1 on their ocean liner). They boast the fact that they own all nine of their river cruise ships, rather than chartering them from other companies (as some of their competition does).
What makes a Peter Deilmann cruise so award worthy? They have a well trained staff that knows how to cater to passengers expecting only the best. Furthermore, they serve five-star quality food, and have elegant ships that feature unique itineraries, taking their passengers to some of the most interesting places in the world.
MS Deutschland is the sole member of the Peter Deilmann Cruises' "Ocean Fleet." She accommodates a little over 500 passengers and visits of 200 ports of call throughout the year. This cruise line used to have a "River Fleet," but due to financial reasons no longer does.
Theme cruises are a nice feature offered by Peter Deilmann Cruises on select voyages. Among the wide variety of theme cruises offered by them are golf, classical music, baroque music, wine, wellness, hiking, equestrian, Oberammergau Passion Play, and cycling.
Peter Deilmann has a North American headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia; however, the main headquarters of this line remains in the Baltic town of Neustadt in Holstein, Germany. Although the company was originally founded in 1968, they did not start offering the truly luxurious river cruises that they are so renowned for until 1983. Although Peter Deilmann has passed away, the company remains run by his two daughters, Gisa and Hedda Deilmann.
The Peter Deilmann fleet can be found cruising throughout much of the globe. They offer cruises in the United States, Canada, Caribbean, South America, Northern Europe (including the Norwegian Fjords, Greenland and Iceland), Africa, the Middle East, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, the Canary Islands and Western Europe (including the British Isles and Scotland). Rarely, they also offer transatlantic cruises.
The award-winning Peter Deilmann ships have a fairly formal onboard atmosphere. However, it can get somewhat lively during the evenings onboard. Live music is available during each evening of their cruises.
Unlike some of their competition, this cruise line offers fixed seating for dining (rather than a more casual open seating setup) in a single restaurant. MS Deutschland actually has two seating times. Afternoon tea and a midnight snack are also readily available. The quality of the (typically multi-course) food is excellent, as is the service (made possible by an excellent passenger-to-crew ratio).
Staterooms do have TVs, and most of the shows are presented in German. Other in-room amenities include telephones, hair dryers, slippers and robes.
The majority of the passengers onboard a typical Peter Deilmann cruise are either German- or English-speaking. As such, both German and English is spoken by the crew onboard all of the Peter Deilmann ships, and printed materials and shore excursions are available in both languages. Age-wise, like the rest of the river cruising world, most of the passengers are 55+.
