Formerly known as Norwegian Coastal Voyage Inc., Hurtigruten is an excellent option for those that are looking for a specialty and/or exploration type of cruise. Especially for those looking to visit destinations such as Norway, Greenland, the Arctic and Antarctica. This long-standing company offers a wide range of vessels on longer than usual cruises along beautiful fjords and mountains.
Although the Hurtigruten fleet does not offer some of the state-of-the-art features that other lines do (like flat-screen TVs, casinos and entertainment venues) they do offer excellent destination-rich itineraries that are further enhanced by their friendly and knowledgeable staff. When you go on a cruise with Hurtigruten you're sure to meet a bunch of interesting people that share a common interest in truly experiencing all of the places being visited.
In 2007 Hurtigruten introduced MS Fram, a beautiful vessel built to explore the waters of Greenland. MS Fram, as well as MS Expedition and MS Polar Star, are the vessels used by Hurtigruten to explore some of the more remote areas of the world.
Hurtigruten classifies their cruises into five main destination groups: Europe (featuring ports of call in various Western Europe countries, such as Amsterdam, the Canary Islands, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the UK), Greenland (sometimes featuring Iceland as well), Norway (sometimes featuring other countries, such as Iceland), Spitsbergen (the largest Norwegian island in the Svalbard archipelago) and Antarctica (typically featuring South America as well). Rarely, Hurtigruten features a transatlantic crossing as well.
Duration-wise, Hurtigruten's cruises typically are anywhere from 9- to 22-nights in length.
The Hurtigruten ships do not feature all of the "bells and whistles" that many other lines do, such as casinos and entertainment. However, you shouldn't be on a Hurtigruten cruise if that's what you're looking for. These ships focus on the destinations being visited, with great shore excursions and tours available. Meeting fellow passengers and creating lasting friendships is commonplace on a Hurtigruten cruise.
Some of the younger Hurtigruten ships, such as MS Finnmarken, MS Fram, MS Midnatsol and MS Trollfjord, do feature a decent selection of modern amenities including swimming pools, Jacuzzis, suites and internet cafes.
There is a very casual dress code onboard the Hurtigruten fleet. There are no formal nights, as experienced on some other cruise lines. As far as the staff goes, they are quite nice and are very on top of things. They're sure to be ready to provide you with whatever services you need, at your call whenever you need them.
Dinner is set up in two seatings, with a set menu each night. There's also a 24-hour cafe onboard each Hurtigruten ship. However, the food at such venues is not included in the price of the cruise (you'll be charged).
Europeans are the majority of the passengers on most Hurtigruten cruises, with a much smaller amount of Americans typically on each sailing. The average passenger is a senior citizen, and families are a rarity on these cruises.
