The ms Prinsendam is one of Holland America Line's older and smaller ships, in fact she's the smallest ship in the entire fleet. She was once a part of Seabourn Cruise Line's fleet, then known as the Seabourn Sun. Holland America uses the Prinsendam mostly for longer voyages, such as their Grand Voyages that go all around the world, including unique ports of call such as those in Africa and South America.
Although the Prinsendam is not brand new, she does feature modern onboard amenities (to go along with her vintage onboard feel). Among them are an internet cafe, as well as Wi-Fi (wireless internet) spots throughout the ship.
The Holland America Prinsendam will be featuring cruises in the following regions (subject to change, based on the cruise line's discretion):
2010: Africa, South America, Transatlantic
Due to her size, there are not as many category staterooms onboard the Prinsendam as that of the other ships in the Holland America fleet. In fact there aren't many interior staterooms onboard the Prinsendam, as the majority of the staterooms have either an oceanview or balcony.
Interior Staterooms: The Prinsendam's most basic staterooms are its interior staterooms. A category R stateroom is actually a single occupancy stateroom (which is a rarity in the cruise industry), while the rest of the staterooms are double occupancy. Each of the double occupancy staterooms feature two lower beds that are convertible to a larger size bed, as well as a bathroom with a shower (of course, the single occupancy staterooms also have a bathroom with shower).
OceanView Staterooms: The Prinsendam's oceanview staterooms are called Large OceanView staterooms. These rooms range in size from 181 to 191 square feet (depending on the particular room). Each room features 2 lower beds that are convertible to 1 king-size bed, as well as a walk-in closet and private bathroom (with a bathtub and shower).
Verandah (Balcony) Staterooms:
A Deluxe OceanView stateroom is the next step up in accommodations onboard the Prinsendam. Such a stateroom has all of the features of a Large OceanView, plus floor-to-ceiling windows with a private verandah, a refrigerator and sitting area. These rooms are anywhere from 228 to 238 square feet.
Suites: The most basic suites onboard the Prinsendam are its Superior Verandah Suites (categories SS and SY). These accommodations are 362 square feet and feature all of the features that a Deluxe OceanView has, plus two sinks in the bathroom (instead of one). Some of these rooms do not have a bathtub (such staterooms only have a shower).
A Deluxe Verandah Suite (category S) is 488 square feet. Such a stateroom features everything that a SS and SV suite do, plus a sofa bed.
The most premium accommodation onboard the Prinsendam is its one (category PS) Penthouse Verandah Suite. This very large stateroom is 774 square feet and features everything that a S suite has, plus a bath with ocean-view whirlpool-tub (instead of a standard bathtub), living room and dining area.
The Prinsendam's main dining room is La Fontaine Dining Room, located on the Lower Promenade deck. This restaurant features fine china, a great wine list, and serves a wonderful five-course dinner. There are vegetarian and low-carb options available in this restaurant. Passengers have the option of booking themselves into a traditional, assigned dining setup (at either an early or main seating) or a more flexible/open dining setup. The flexible/open dining schedule is available from 5:15 pm to 9:00 pm. You must choose which format you prefer when you initially book your cruise. You can change your mind prior to your departure, but the dining you prefer may be waitlisted or closed at that point in time.
The Pinnacle Grill is the Prinsendam's optional specialty restaurant, located mid-ship on the Lower Promenade deck. This gourmet venue offers a 5-star dining experience, featuring upscale selections such as Sterling Silver Beef, fresh seafood and a world-class wine list. There is a $20 per person cover charge for dinner, and a $10 per person cover charge for lunch at the Pinnacle Grill. This restaurant is available by reservation only, and it is recommended that you make your reservations as soon as you know that you want to go (to avoid the restaurant being booked up when you want to eat there). Children under 12 dine at the Pinnacle Grill free of charge. Children 13 to 17 years of age only have to pay half of the typical cover charge.
The Prinsendam's main buffet area is located on the Lido deck and is (appropriately) named the Lido Restaurant. It's a casual and relaxed dining option that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner (with wait service). The Lido Restaurant features a wide variety of choices, from pasta, pizza, cooked-to-order omelets, and a salad bar to gourmet sandwiches, sushi and Asian stir-fry. Indoor and outdoor seating is available at this venue.
The Terrace Grill is located outside on the Lido deck. This venue serves pizza, sandwiches, sausages, nachos, hamburgers and hot dogs. It's a nice option for a relaxing poolside lunch.
Don't forget that 24 hour room service is available for all passengers. There is a basic complimentary menu, but it's an excellent option for a late night snack, or for when you're feeling a little lazy and would rather the food come to you. There are a few items on the menu that you can order at an additional cost, such as bar drinks.
The first passenger level deck onboard the Prinsendam is the Dolphin deck. On this deck are a wide range of oceanview staterooms, as well as a few interior staterooms. As far as public rooms go, the lowest level of the atrium is also on this deck, as is the Stuyvesant Room and a set of stairs which can be taken down one level to the infirmary.
The second deck of the Prinsendam is the Main deck. Besides the atrium's second level, there are also a bunch of oceanview staterooms on this deck.
The next deck up on the Prinsendam is the Lower Promenade deck. Towards the rear of the ship on this deck is the Prinsendam's main dining room, La Fontaine. Also on this deck (loated mid-ship) is the Pinnacle Grill (the Prinsendam's specialty restaurant), the Half Moon Room, an art gallery, the third level of the atrium, the Ocean Bar and a dance floor. There are also a few interior and oceanview staterooms on this deck.
The Prinsendam's fourth deck is the Promenade deck, where you can find the Queen's Lounge (the Prinsendam's main show lounge, where there is a wonderful show on each night of the cruise), the fourth level of the atrium, the front office, the shore excursions desk, photo gallery, shopping arcade, Explorations Cafe (a nice coffee house), the Wajang Theatre & Culinary Arts Center (a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen that offers interactive cooking lessons), the Oak Room, the Java Bar & Cafe, the casino, the Explorer's Lounge, a whirlpool and a few suites (at the rear of the ship).
The fifth deck up on the Prinsendam is the Upper Promenade deck. Towards the rear of the ship on this deck is the Greenhouse Salon & Spa, where you can find a beauty salon, various therapy rooms, saunas, steam rooms and a fitness center. There is also a pool and a couple of whirlpools towards the rear of the ship. There are a few interior and oceanview staterooms on this deck, as well as many verandah staterooms.
The next deck up is the Verandah deck, where you can find a slew of suites.
Deck seven is the Lido deck, where the Lido Restaurant (the Prinsendam's casual main buffet area, featuring various cooked-to-order items) is located.
Also on this deck is the Terrace Grill, which is great for a quick outdoors snack. There are also ten category S suites (forward) on this deck. The Neptune Lounge, bridge, Lido Pool (the ship's main pool), a whirlpool and the Lido Bar are all also located on the Lido deck.
The Sports deck is the next deck up onboard the Prinsendam, and is where you can find Crow's Nest, the jogging track, a bocce ball court, a croquet court, some putting greens, and a few suites (including the Prinsendam's only Penthouse Verandah Suite, its most premium accommodation).
Deck nine is the Observation deck, and its the highest deck on the Prinsendam. If you venture up there you'll be the recipient of a wonderful panoramic view of the ship's (usually exotic) surroundings.
Dress during the day is casual. Holland America asks that you wear shoes and a cover-up over bathing suits when you walk in the interior of the ship.
Evening dress is broken up into two categories by Holland America: Formal or Smart Casual. Smart Casual is defined by Holland America as slacks and collared shirts for men and casual dresses, slacks and informal evening wear for women. T-shirts, swimsuits, tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the restaurants or public areas during the evening hours. On Formal evenings, ladies usually wear a suit, cocktail dress or gown and gentlemen wear a jacket and tie, dark suit or tuxedo. There are approximately two formal nights per week.
