Disney Cruise Line Overview
Disney Cruise Line, not surprisingly, is owned by the Walt Disney Company. It is run as a part of their Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division. While the company itself was established in 1995, the first Disney cruise ship did not launch until 1998 (Disney Magic). Shortly following the Magic's launch, Disney launched a sister ship the next year (Disney Wonder). Prior to the launch of Disney Cruise Line, the Disney name was involved in the cruising industry with, the now out of business, Premier Line Cruises (whose ships were also known as "The Big Red Boat").

The Disney Cruise Line ships were the first ships built specifically for family cruising. As such, there are certain onboard features that other lines do not offer. These include free soda in the dining rooms and at certain locations on the ship, in addition to the Buena Vista Cinema (featuring Disney movies). There are also certain features that are lacking, relative to the cruising industry. For example, there are no casinos or libraries onboard their ships. Relative to the cruising industry, the Disney staterooms are fairly large. In fact, many of the staterooms feature a "bath-and-a-half."

In September of 2008, Disney Magic entered dry dock to undergo an exciting slew of enhancements. Among these upgrades are 22" flat-screen TVs in staterooms, as well as the addition of Quiet Cove (an adults-only pool retreat), Mickey's Splash Zone (a toddler water playground) and the Oceaneer Club (a Neverland-themed play space for 3 to 7 year olds).

Disney Cruise Line has recently launched two new 128,000-ton cruise ships, which debuted in 2011 (Disney Dream) and 2012 (Disney Fantasy). This is very exciting news for fans of the Disney product, as new ships have been long awaited (the current ships were built in 1998 and 1999) and offer much more space and features than the current 83,000-ton ships. The new ships can accommodate up to 4,000 passengers, and they each have about 1,250 staterooms. Among the exciting new features available on board these ships are inside staterooms with Virtual Portholes and a huge AquaDuck Water Coaster!

Disney Cruise Line Destinations
Initially Disney Cruise Line only traveled to the Bahamas and Caribbean. They have now expanded their itineraries to include Europe (Mediterranean, Northern Europe and Western Europe) and Transatlantic cruises as well. Exciting news for Disney is that, during 2011, they will be adding Alaska and Mexican Riviera cruises to their offerings.

Castaway Cay is Disney's exclusive private island in the Bahamas. On this island there are lots of family activities to participate in, and beaches to relax on (including an adults-only beach). You have the option of purchasing a land stay on this island (at a Disney Resort), in addition to your Disney cruise.

Onboard Disney Cruise Line
You'll know you're about to go on a Disney cruise the second you see their appropriately decorated ships. The Disney cruise ships are modern, but have a classic "ocean liner" look. As expected, a Disney cruise offers tons of activities and lots of entertainment. Disney cruises are very family-friendly. On both of the Disney cruise ships there are a few pools, a water slide, and hot tubs. Although Disney wants these ships to be mostly geared towards families and children, there are features onboard each ship that are intended to give adults some "alone time." For example, there is an adults-only pool and an adults-only lounge onboard each ship.

Gamblers and readers be warned - there are no casinos or libraries onboard any of the Disney cruise ships. Although that might be a negative for some, please keep in mind that because these usually large rooms are not onboard the Disney ships, there is much more room for features not found on other cruise lines. For example, the Buena Vista Cinema is a theater where throughout the day you can watch some of the newest Disney movies.

Throughout all of the Disney ships you'll see tons of Disney related memorabilia and artwork. Popular Disney characters will be walking around the ship at times.

Standard Disney ship features include a few internet access locations, a spa and fitness center, dining rooms, a teen lounge, lots of play areas for younger children, and a main show lounge (their ships' most popular entertainment venue). Standard stateroom features include a larger-than-average bathroom, a TV, a mini bar (that you have to pay for what you take from), a hair dryer, and a safe.

The Disney cruise ships offer a great children's program. The program divides children into groups, based on their ages. There is also a teens program available onboard (for ages 13-17), which is a great way for teens to meet each other and have lots of fun during their cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Past Passengers
Disney Cruise Line's past passenger program is the Castaway Club. As a member of this special club you will benefit from priority trip planning, onboard gifts, invitations to members-only cocktail parties, and more. View our Castaway Club page for more information.

Disney Cruise Line Fleet
There are 4 cruise ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. Two newer ships have given the line a spice of youth (one in 2011, and the other in 2012), named Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, respectively.
