Tourist Attractions Downtown Skagway is within walking distance of the cruise port. This charming area is filled with various shops, pubs and restaurants. It's a great place to walk around and enjoy a view of the beautiful mountains surrounding the area. If you're downtown and are looking for a place to hang out, the Red Onion Saloon is a (typically tourist-filled) pub in the area.
The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad is a very popular tourist attraction, which is why just about every cruise line offers this as a shore excursion. The dramatic scenery one can see while riding on this railway, around beautiful mountains, draws a lot of tourists.
Another popular shore excursion offered by most cruise lines is gold panning, where you can learn about and relive the exciting gold rush history of Skagway. Speaking of gold rush, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is located in Skagway. This venue commemorates the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s.
For those that have been in Skagway a few times already and are looking for something different to do, there are ferries are available that can transport passengers to the city of Haines. It's about a 35 to 40 minute ride and it's a nice place to do some whale watching, or to see some bald eagles.
