Overview

Sitka, sometimes called "Sitka-by-the-Sea," is Alaska's fourth most populous city, and is the largest city in the United States by area. Originally settled by the native Tlingit Indians, Old Sitka was founded in 1799 by the governor of Russian America. Sitka was the site of the ceremony where the Russian flag was lowered and the US flag was raised after the US purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. This event is reenacted annually in Sitka on Alaska Day (October 18). Gold mining and fish canning is what originally helped this town grow; however, it really boomed after the Navy constructed an air base there.

Today, most of the city consists of the massive Tongass National Forest (the largest national forest in the US). Sitka happens to be one of the most beautiful and historic cities in all of Alaska, making it a popular port of call on many Alaska cruises. Its combination of Russian and Tlingit history is evident, making this city quite unique and worth visiting.

Tourist Attractions
Popular activities to participate in while in Sitka include fishing (for salmon and halibut in particular), site seeing (various museums and historic sites) and wildlife watching.

The Alaska Raptor Center is a great place to check out. While there, guests can view and learn all about eagles. The main function of this venue is to provide medical treatment to injured bald eagles and other birds, and there's an amazing flight center there where you can see the birds in action. Visiting hours vary.

Russian Bishop's House is a historic landmark in Sitka that showcases the Russian heritage of this city. Located right next to this venue is the Sitka Rose Gallery, featuring over 100 artists. At this gallery you can see various fossils, wood engravings, sculptures and paintings made by Native Alaskan Indian and Eskimo tribes.

Sheldon Jackson Museum, a National Historic Landmark since 1972, is located in Alaska's first concrete building. It is the home to a collection of items from Alaskan natives gathered by Dr. Sheldon Jackson, mostly during the late 19th century. There's a nice gift shop there as well.

A great place to grab a bite to eat while in Sitka is Ludvig's Bistro Incorporated. It's located on Katlian Street and is open Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 9 pm (subject to change). It's not a huge place, but the food and staff are great. Try the salmon!

Port Location
Cruise ships anchor offshore (in the Sitka Sound) and use tender boats to transport their passengers between Sitka and the ship. Passengers are dropped off right in town, making many attractions within walking distance.
