Overview

Operating as a cruise departure port since 1982, Port Canaveral is considered to be the second busiest cruise port in the world (after Miami, FL).

Port Canaveral, located along Florida's east cost, offers the Kennedy Space Center as its premier attraction. This area is also popular among surfers and wildlife lovers.

Since Port Canaveral is located about 45 minutes from the Orlando area, it is a popular cruise departure port for those that would like to do a pre- and/or post-cruise hotel stay in the Orlando area. Orlando is popular because it is home to a wide range of attractions including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld.

Tourist Attractions
As mentioned above, Port Canaveral is usually associated with Orlando as far as tourism goes. Most cruisers that choose to do a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay will opt to stay in Orlando because of the wide range of ultra-popular resorts and theme parks located there. Among these venues are Walt Disney World (including Pleasure Island), Universal Studios Orlando (including popular night spot CityWalk), SeaWorld Orlando and Wet 'n Wild.

Although this region does not offer as much as Orlando, in terms of theme parks and resorts, there are a few popular attractions. For example, Kennedy Space Center (the NASA space vehicle launch facility) is located on nearby Merritt Island. This is probably the most popular tourist attraction in the Port Canaveral area, as various tours and demonstrations are available for those that are interested.

Port Canaveral is also well known as being a popular surfing and sun bathing spot, as it offers 72-miles of amazing beaches (known as the Space Coast, because of the nearby space center).

Port Canaveral is also known to be a premier wildlife preservation area. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is a large preserved wildlife habitat with some (controlled) public access available.

Besides the above mentioned attractions there are also many restaurants and shops in the Port Canaveral area.
