Overview
Rangiroa is the largest atoll (an island of coral that encircles a lagoon) in the Tuamotu Archipelago, a chain of atolls in French Polynesia. It's made up of over 240 islets that are separated by over 100 small channels, making up a ring of coral.
Rangiroa is especially famous for its amazing scuba diving, especially at the Tiputa Pass. Also popular in Rangiroa is its unique vineyard and black pearl farms.
The main town in Rangiroa is Avatoru, located in the northwest portion of the atoll. Tiputa village is another area popular to visit while on a cruise visiting Rangiroa.
Destinations Rangiroa is included on many South Pacific cruise itineraries.

Currency The official currency of French Polynesia is the CFP franc (XPF), commonly called the franc. Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency. ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using.
Language The official languages of French Polynesia are French and Tahitian. Some English is spoken by a few locals that are involved with tourist-related places (such as major tourist attractions, restaurants, stores and hotels) and activities (such as tours).
Tourist Attractions The town of Avatoru (Rangiroa's main town) is cute, and is a quite typical town relative to this part of the world. Within this town you'll find the town hall, a church, a post office, banks and a few stores.
Located in Avatoru is the only vineyard and winery in French Polynesia, Cave de Rangiroa (which houses the Vin de Tahiti brand). Tours and tastings are available. The vineyards in Rangiroa are unique becaues the vines grow on the edge of a lagoon right by a coconut.
Rangiroa is the home to many black pearl farms. One of them is Gauguin's Pearl Farm, open five days a week (the hours vary). A popular thing to do is to pay to open an oyster and keep the pearl inside.
Popular excursions in Rangiroa include glassbottom boat rides, snorkeling and scuba diving. In fact, with its beautiful marine-life filled lagoon and white-sand beaches, Rangiroa is a very popular scuba diving destination. In particular, the Tiputa Pass is considered by many to be one of the best dive spots in the world.
