Overview
Moorea is one of French Polynesia's Society Islands, located about 9 miles northwest of Tahiti. The main village in Moorea is Afareaitu.
Because of its exotic natural beauty and proximity to Tahiti, Moorea is a popular honeymoon destination. Moorea is a much less crowded island than the more marketed islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti. As such, it's a nice place to still enjoy the exotic waters, beaches and natural surroundings of the South Pacific.
Destinations Moorea is included on a many South Pacific cruise itineraries.

Language The official languages of French Polynesia are French and Tahitian. English is spoken by some locals that are involved with tourist-related places (such as major tourist attractions, restaurants, stores and hotels) and activities (such as tours).
Tourist Attractions Moorea, like most of the other South Pacific island destinations, has great beaches and lagoons. As such, snorkeling and scuba diving is quite popular in Moorea.
Swimming with stingrays is a popular shore excursion to take part in while in Moorea. Other popular excursions include 4x4 off road rides, dolphin encounters, whale watching and island tours. A motu, a sandy coral islet, is the perfect place to enjoy a nice day at the beach. Excursions are offered, via a motorized boat, to such islets.
Belvedere Lookout is an often visited spot high up in the mountains of Moorea. It's a great place to enjoy a spectacular view of much of the island. It's a definite "must see" while in Moorea.
Tiki Village Cultural Centre is a place where visitors get an opportunity to experience an authentic French Polynesian village. There are various demonstrations performed there, including tattooing, dancing, weaving and stone carving.
There are a few resorts in Moorea, many of which have the famous overwater bungalows that are often seen in tourist brochures of the South Pacific islands.
Public transportation is almost non-existent in Moorea. Because of this, renting a car, bicycle or motorized scooter is a popular thing to do.
Port Location Cruise ships need to dock offshore (in Cook's Bay) and use tenders to transport passengers to and from the island.
Since Moorea is located only 9 miles from Tahiti, there are ferries that go from the Vaiare wharf in Moorea to Papeete (the capital of Tahiti). The ferry ride takes about a half hour to transit between the two islands.
