Overview

Stanley, formerly known as Port Stanley, is the capital city of the Falkland Islands (a British Overseas Territory). This city is actually located on the island of East Falkland.

The Falkland Islands are made up of two main islands (one of them being East Falkland, as mentioned above, and the other being West Falkland) and 776 smaller islands. These islands are located about 300 miles from Argentina. The inhabitants of the island are full British citizens and are also eligible for Argentine citizenship.

The main tourist attractions in this area are the beautiful eco-related activities and wildlife (such as penguins, birds, seals, whales and sea lions). The locals are quite nice, as they appreciate tourism and what it brings to their economy.

The most popular time to visit this area is from November through February, as this is the warmest time of the year when there's the most wildlife to see. This area of the world is very windy and can actually lead to cruise ships being unable to make it to this port of call.

Destinations
Stanley is included on several South America and Antarctica cruise itineraries.

Cruise Lines Departing Here

Stanley is not a cruise departure port.

Currency
The official currency of the Falkland Islands is the Falkland pound (FKP), which is kept equal to the British pound sterling. Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency. US dollars and British pounds are both accepted as well. ATM machines are readily available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using.

Language
The official language of the Falkland Islands is English.

Tourist Attractions
Stanley is the main shopping area on the island of East Falkland.
Attractions in this area include the Falkland Islands Museum, a golf course (Stanley Golf Course, featuring 18 holes and a club house) and the Government House (built in 1845, home to the governor of the Falkland Islands). There are also a few pubs, restaurants and hotels on the island.

The Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, located on Ross Road, is the southernmost cathedral in the world. It was built in 1892 and is known for its whalebone arch (located in front of hte cathedral). The arch is made from the jawbones of two blue whales. This church is actually featured on the back of the Falkland pound.

Being a small city, there are some buildings in Stanley that serve multiple purposes. For instance, the town hall is also a post office, law court, library and dance court!

Gypsy Cove is a small bay located on East Falkland, about 4 miles from Stanley. There is a local bus that can take you to this area from Stanley (it runs about once an hour). This area was filled up with landmines by the Argentines, during their 1982 occupation of the Falkland Islands. Because of this danger, portions of the area are fenced off (since humans can set the mines off by walking on them). Because humans do not enter this area, it has become filled with penguins. Penguins are light enough that they don't set the mines off. Tourists come to this popular area to watch the penguins (from a safe spot, away from any mines).

Game fishing, particularly for sea trout, is a popular activity to participate in while in the Falkland Islands.

Port Location
Cruise ships anchor offshore (in Stanley Harbour) and use tenders to transport their passengers to and from Stanley. The tenders drop people off right in the center of town.
