Overview

Puerto Montt is a port city located in southern Chile. It's a major port of call for cruises that are circumventing the southern tip of South America.

This city was founded in 1853 by German immigrants, giving a reason for the European influence that's still noticeable in this area. After a horrible earthquake in 1960 the cruise port and large portions of the city had to be rebuilt.

Many cruisers travel to nearby areas that have more to offer tourists (such as the nearby city of Puerto Varas or the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park), as there's not really a ton of things to do within Puerto Montt itself.

Every month in Puerto Montt has rain, especially in June, July and August. The annual average temperature in this area is 52.2 °F, as being located in the southern part of South America leads to a colder overall temperature relative to the more northern sections of the continent. Summer high temperatures can get as high as the low 80s.

Destinations
Puerto Montt is included on several South America cruise itineraries.

Cruise Lines Departing Here

Puerto Montt is not a cruise departure port.

Currency
The official currency of Chile is the peso (CLP). Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency (which is actually hard to do in Chile, unless you find an exchange center). US Dollars will be accepted at some local vendors, but don't count on it. ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using.

Language
The official language of Chile is Spanish. Don't count on many (if any) locals speaking English, unless you're taking a cruise line provided shore excursion, where the tour guide should speak English.

Tourist Attractions
Puerto Montt has a large outdoor market, Feria Artesanal de Angelmó. It's located on Avenida Angelmó and features is a bunch of shops, selling lots of crafts and souvenirs (as well as food).

Museo Juan PabloII, which is open 7 days a week, is a museum with many artifacts from this area of the world.

Puerto Varas is is nearby town (located 20 km north of Puerto Montt) that's well known for its German traditions, as well as its seafood, restaurants, casino and hotels. It's a popular area to visit among tourists. This town is located on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, one of the largest natural lakes in South America. The cruise lines usually offer a few water sport shore excursions in this area (such as rafting and fishing).

Petrohué Waterfalls is a waterfall located on the upper section of the Petrohué River, located at the foot of Volcán Osorno (one of the most active volcanoes in the southern Chilean Andes). This waterfall is located inside of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. Most of this area is located within the Andes mountain chain. This area is located about 82 km northeast of Puerto Montt (about an hour driving). The cruise lines usually offer various shore excursions to this area, including hiking tours.

Frutillar is a small German-influenced village located near Puerto Montt, along Lake Llanquihue. While walking around town the German inspired architecture is quite evident.

Port Location
Large cruise ships must anchor offshore (not too far from the mainland) and use tender boats to transport passengers to and from Puerto Montt. Smaller ships can dock at a pier that's located within walking distance of the center of town (about 9 blocks away). There will be many taxis at the pier to take you wherever you want to go.
