Overview

Montevideo is the largest city in, and capital of, the South American country of Uruguay. Located in southern Uruguay, Montevideo has many beautiful beaches, museums and monuments within it. Also nearby are the larger cities of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Sao Paulo (Brazil).

Over it's long and interesting history, this city has been controlled by many countries (including Portugal, Spain and Britain), giving it an influence from very different cultures. Originally founded by the Portuguese during the 17th century, this city was later taken over by the Spanish and was used by them during the 18th century as a military stronghold. The first settlers of this area came from the Canary Islands. The Portuguese invaded this area and took the country over in 1821 (making it under the control of Brazil), but independence from Brazil was gained in 1825, with the help of Argentina. A heavy British influence came over this area while they were warring with Spain during the early 19th century and a British influence remained evident through the early 20th century.

The weather in Montevideo is pretty mild all year. The hottest time of the year is typically from December through March (their summer). The hottest month of the year, on average is January, with an average daily high of 83ºF. The coldest months in Montevideo are usually June through August, with the coldest month on average being July (with an average daily high of 58ºF).

Cruise Lines Departing Here

Montevideo is not a cruise departure port.

Currency
The official currency of Uruguay is the Uruguayan peso (UYU). Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency. US Dollars will be accepted at some places as well - don't expect your change to be in US Dollars though, so bring small bills if you plan to pay that way. ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using.

Language
The official language of Uruguay is Spanish. Don't count on many locals speaking English, unless you're in one of the main tourist areas (or are on a tour).

Tourist Attractions
Being a smaller port city, a one day visit in Montevideo should provide enough time to see everything and experience the essence of this area. A good choice for a shore excursion in this city is a city tour.

18 de Julio is the main avenue in Montevideo. Along this avenue you'll find many stores and cafes, in addition to a museum. The most popular items for purchase in Montevideo are leather, various locally made crafts and jewelry.

Ciudad Vieja is the oldest part of Montevideo. It's the main nightlife section in town, as most of the nightclubs are location there. Mariachi is one of the most popular bars and discos in the city. Sarandi is an old street in this area that was turned into a pedestrian walkway in 1992, making it one of the more popular areas in the city among tourists. Some of the buildings in this area date back to the city's colonial era, such as the Cabildo (a museum that used to be a government building, serving as a town hall, during the city's colonial days), Torres Garcia Museum, the Solis Theatre (Uruguay's oldest theatre, built in 1857, where you can go see opera, symphonies and ballets) and the Metropolitan Cathedral (the main Roman Catholic church of Montevideo, located in front of the Cabildo).

Plaza Independencia is the most important square in Montevideo. Located in the center of this area is the Artigas Mausoleum, a monument made in tribute to José Artigas (a Uruguayan national hero). His remains are kept in a room underneath the statue. This plaza splits the Ciudad Vieja from downtown Montevideo. The workplaces of the President of Uruguay are located nearby this area.

Beach lovers should consider a trip to Punta del Este, an upscale resort city (located on the southern tip of Uruguay, about 140 km east of Montevideo). This is a internationally famous resort spot that is considered by many to be the most exclusive vacation option in South America. There are beautiful white-sand beaches in this area; among them are Bikini Beach, Manantiales Beach and Montoya Beach. Sport fishing is also available in this area.

Gambling is legal in Montevideo, so there are a few casinos in the area for those that are interested. Plaza Victoria Casino is located by the Plaza Independencia. There are blackjack and roulette tables, as well as and slot machines, baccarat, bingo and horse racing available. It opens at 2 pm and is open through the night.

Port Location
The cruise port, Puerto de Montevideo, is located nearby the city center (about 1 mile away). Taxis should be available at the port, ready to take you wherever you want to go.
