Overview
Israel is one of the most holiest and spiritual places in the world, being the birthplace of some of the world's major religions. Haifa, located in northern Israel along the historic slopes of Mount Carmel, is the third-largest city in Israel. This city is also one of the major seaports in all of Israel.
What particularly attracts tourists to Haifa is its rich history. As such, there are plenty of interesting museums, temples, churches and mosques in this city. Also in Haifa are upscale hotels, shopping malls and white-sand beaches. While in the Haifa area, some tourists also choose to visit one of the nearby cities (such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Nazareth).
This historic city dates back to Biblical times. Over its history many battles were fought over control of this area. Rulers of this land have included the Byzantines, Arabs, the Crusaders, the Ottomans, Egyptians and the British. After the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Haifa served as a major gateway for Jewish immigration.
Located along the Mediterranean, Haifa has hot and humid summers with cool and rainy winters. The average summer temperature is 79°F, while the average temperature during the winter is 54°F.

Currency The official currency of Israel is the Israeli new sheqel (ILS). Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency. ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using.
Language The official languages of Israel are Hebrew and Arabic. English is a widely spoken non-official language in Israel.
Tourist Attractions The main tourist attraction in Haifa is the Bahá'í World Centre, the administrative centre of the Bahá'í Faith (a religion founded during the 19th century in Persia). This is also the destination for Bahá'í pilgrimage. Located within this area is the Shrine of the Báb, located right on Mount Carmel. Bahá'í Gardens is a beautiful area that makes this part of Haifa very recognizable.
The restored German Colony, which was founded by the Templers (a religious German society), is another very popular tourist destination in Haifa. It was founded in 1868 and was the first colony established by the Templers in the Holy Land. It was also the first model of urban planning in Israel.
The Stella Maris Monastery, built during the 19th century, is located along Mount Carmel. It's a very popular area in Haifa and has a national park within its grounds. This area was the location of Biblical events, including the home of the Cave of Elijah, and is also a popular hiking area. Neanderthal and early Homo Sapiens remains were also found in this historic area. Today, this Monastery serves as the world centre for Carmelites.
Grand Canyon is Haifa's largest and most popular shopping mall. This mall features many famous brands, such as Armani and Lacoste.
Dining in Haifa is quite a treat, as there is a quite diverse selection to choose from. Some of the favorite regional choices are lamb, falafel and hummus. There are also various international options as well, including Chinese and Italian food.
The IEC Tower (completed in 2003) is the tallest building in Haifa, at 130 meters high (30 floors). This building is used by the Israeli Electric Corporation.
Taking a bus tour to the holy and ancient city of Jerusalem, located about 81 miles from Haifa, is a very popular shore excursion to take part in. Popular attractions in Jerusalem include Dome of the Rock, the Western Wall, Yad Vashem, Mount of Olives and The Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Nazareth, the birthplace and childhood home of Jesus Christ, is only 38 km to the east of Haifa. As such, that's another popular city to visit while in the area. Tel Aviv, the second-largest city in Israel, is located about 56 miles south of Haifa. Tel Aviv is a very popular tourist city, as it's the home to many beautiful beaches, cafes and upscale shopping. Its White City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Port Location The cruise terminal in Haifa is located right along the coast of Haifa Bay. Within the terminal is a place to eat, a currency exhange area and a parking facility.
