Overview

Puerto Limon, also simply known as Limon, is the capital of the Limon Province in Costa Rica. Puerto Limon is Costa Rica's main cruise port.

Ecotourism is very popular in Costa Rica, as there are tropical rainforests, national parks and even volcanoes. The most popular thing to do while in Puerto Limon is to visit the beautiful surrounding areas. Being a tropical area, the temperature in this region is quite hot year round. Not surprisingly, there is also a significant amount of rain throughout the year.

From tours of national parks and rainforests to whitewater rafting and surfing, Costa Rica offers something for all travelers.

Be careful when walking around the city. Although the Costa Ricans are known for their hospitality to tourists, there is still enough crime to be wary of while there.

Destinations
Puerto Limon is included on a few Panama Canal cruise itineraries.

Cruise Lines Departing Here
Puerto Limon is not a cruise departure port, however it is featured as a port of call on some Panama Canal cruises.

Currency
The official currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC). US Dollars are readily accepted at many places as well. Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language of Costa Rica is Spanish. A decent amount of the locals will speak some English as well, especially in the tourist areas.

Tourist Attractions
There is a nice crafts market right in the Puerto Limon cruise port.

A nice beach that's close to the cruise terminal is Playa Bonita. It's only a few miles away from the pier and is easily reachable via taxi. There are a few restaurants there as well. Surfing is possible at this beach, but it's fairly shallow water so be careful if you take part. Among other beaches in the Limon area are Gandoca Beach and Manzanillo Beach.

Although there are beautiful beaches in the area, the vast number of eco-related sites to see tend to steer people away from the beach.
Taking a cruise line arranged shore excursion is a popular, and excellent, option in Puerto Limon. The cruise lines typically offer a wide range of nature-geared options. There will usually be private tour companies waiting at the pier for those that would like to be a little more independent and spontaneous. Whitewater rafting is a great excursion choice for the more active and adventurous travelers.

A popular excursion to take is a tour of the Tortuguero National Park and its many canals. This is a great place to experience some of the best wildlife in Costa Rica, including various tropical birds and sea turtles. There is a wide range of habitats in this area, including swamps, lagoons, beaches and a rainforest.

Another popular national park nearby Puerto Limon is Cahuita National Park. This park offers great scuba diving and snorkeling, in a protected marine area that has a coral reef.

Another nice excursion option is to take a ride on the Rain Forest Aerial Trams. It's a "can't miss" tour that you're sure to enjoy! Many tourists will combine this wonderful trip with a nature walk, for a more all-encompassing experience of the rainforest.
