Overview Cristobal is actually a part of the city of Colón, in the Central American country of Panama. There's not a ton of things to do for tourists in Cristobal itself, other than a little shopping. However, because of this city's close proximity to the eastern opening of the Panama Canal, it's a nice place to take a shore excursion to experience the canal.
Destinations Cristobal is included on quite a few Panama Canal cruise itineraries.
Cruise Lines Departing Here
Cristobal is not a cruise departure port.
Currency The official currency of Panama is the Balboa (PAB). 1 Balboa is always kept as equal to 1 US Dollar, and US Dollars are readily accepted everywhere. Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.
Language The official language of Panama is Spanish. A decent amount of the locals will speak at least some English as well, but don't count on the majority of them being fluent.
Tourist Attractions There is a large shopping area and flea market right at the Cristobal pier. Other than that area, there's not really any other significant shopping locations. Among the items to purchase are usually perfume, clothing, locally made crafts and jewelry.
It is not advisable to walk around Cristobal. Take a taxi wherever you want to go.
A popular shore excursion to participate in while in this port of call is to take a motor coach tour of the Panama Canal and Panama City. Another popular thing to do is to take a Tram ride, traversing the Gatun Locks of the Panama Canal (and sometimes the rain forest as well). This is a truly spectacular experience. Be sure to check what particular shore excursions are offered by your cruise line.
Port Location Cruise ships dock at the Cristobal pier. Taxis are available right at the pier, and it is advisable to use taxis to get wherever you want to go.
