Overview Costa Maya is a small tourist area in Mexico, with many undeveloped areas. Over the past few years this region has been growing and developing rather quickly, in an attempt to become a more in demand port of call for cruises. It has actually become a resort town as a result of all the development.
Mahahual (sometimes spelled as Majahual) is a nearby small fishing village, located only 2 miles away from the cruise port. This area features beautiful white sand beaches, bars, restaurants and shops.
Hurricane Dean, a category 5 hurricane that developed in 2007, caused major damage to this region, causing it to close down to cruise ships. The area is scheduled to reopen its port to cruise ships in mid to late 2008.
Destinations Costa Maya is included on some Western Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Costa Maya is near a few of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan region of Mexico. Among these the most popular are probably the Chacchoben Ruins, which are located about 73 km west of Costa Maya. It's estimated that this area was first settled at about 200 BC, and that many of the structures date back to about 700 AD. Many of the cruise lines offer shore excursions to this area, making it a popular option among cruisers.
Port Location The cruise port is located right by the main tourist area of Costa Maya, and is also only 2 miles away from the fishing village and tourist area of Mahahual.
