Overview

Belize City is the largest city in, and former capital of, the Central American nation of Belize. It's located right at the mouth of the Belize River, which flows into the Caribbean Sea. The capital was relocated to Belmopan after a devastating storm struck the city.

This city has a long history of being controlled by various empires. Belize was once a part of the Mayan Empire and (later on) the Spanish Empire, and was even a British colony.

The population density of Belize is one of the lowest in the world. Tourism has become the main source of revenue for Belize.

The climate in Belize is tropical, as it's very hot and humid year round. The rainy season is generally considered to range from May through November.

Featuring a beautiful barrier reefs, diving, water rafting and snorkeling are all very popular in this area. Fishing is a nice option there as well. It's quite advisable to book a shore excursion through the cruise line at this port of call, to ensure that you're using a reputable company.

Belize City is one of those rare cruise ports where some passengers may not want to actually walk around town as there are some questionable areas (especially at night). Such travelers usually opt to take a shore excursion offered through the cruise line. Others choose to stay around the Tourism Village only, to shop and/or eat.

Destinations
Belize City is included on several Western Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Currency
The official currency of Belize is the Belizean Dollar (BZD). US Dollars are widely accepted at many places as well. Using a credit card whenever possible is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language of Belize is English. In fact, Belize is the only country in Central America that has English as its official language. Most locals also speak either Spanish and/or Kriol as well.

Tourist Attractions
The best (and just about only worthwhile) shopping area for tourists in Belize City is the Tourism Village located right by the area where tenders drop passengers off from the ship. There are also restaurants in this area.

The most popular tourist attraction in Belize is the Belize Barrier Reef. In fact, it's the second largest coral reef system in the world. Because of this, diving, snorkeling, rafting, tubing and kayaking are all popular activities to participate in while in Belize City. The most recommended way to do this is by taking a shore excursion provided by your cruise line. This will ensure that you are dealing with a trustworthy company. There are also ferries and water taxis that can take you to one of the nearby resort cays, if you'd prefer to go off on your own.

Of all the water activities to take part in while in Belize, diving is probably what the area is best known for. Located about 50 miles southeast of Belize City is Lighthouse Reef, one this area's most popular diving spots. Blue Hole National Monument is a popular attraction there. This area is located near Ambergris Caye, a resort island.

The beaches in Ambergris Caye are among the best in Belize. Mar de Tumbo is a very popular beach in this area. Caye Caulker is another nice choice if you're looking to relax at a beach. There are also a number of shops and restaurants there.

Day trips to Mayan sites are a fairly popular excursion to take part in while in this area. There are actually quite a few of these ancient sites to see. One of the more popular of them is Altun Ha (located about 30 miles north of Belize City).

Port Location
Cruise ships anchor offshore and use tenders to transport passengers to and from Belize City. The tenders drop passengers off right by the Tourism Village. There's usually a line of taxis there, ready to take you wherever you desire. Be sure to agree on a price prior to departing with the taxi, to make sure you don't get ripped off.
