Overview Santorini, also known as Thera or Thira (in Greek), is a small chain of Greek volcanic islands in the Aegean Sea. Today's Santorini was actually formed as the result of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world's history. This island is frequently mentioned as being one of the possible locations of the fabled city of Atlantis.
Because of its exotic location, unique vistas, beautiful sunsets and exciting nightlife, Santorini is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations.
Destinations Santorini is often times included on European cruise itineraries.
Cruise Lines Departing Here
Santorini is not a cruise departure port.
Currency The official currency is the Euro. ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using. ATM machines will usually give you a better exchange rate than a bank or hotel. Using a credit card is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.
Language The official language of Greece is Greek. However, you'll find many people fluent in English (especially in the tourist areas).
Tourist Attractions Fira (or Thera), Santorini's capital, is a great place for those that want to shop and/or walk around and just experience the island. The cliff top restaurants, whitewashed buildings and cobblestone streets are part of what makes Fira a beautiful and unique city.
Oia is a small village nearby Fira. The Oia sunset is famous and is an event that attracts many tourists. A particularly popular area to view the sunset is by this town's castle. Another popular, and more expensive, way to view the sunset is to charter a private boat to enjoy the view while at sea.
For those that want to really get a taste of the geographic wonders that Santorini has to offer, a shore excursion is an excellent (and recommended) option.
Akrotiri is a famous excavation site in Santorini. It was originally buried in a 17th century volcanic eruption and is very well preserved.
Port Location In Santorini cruise ships have to tender (anchor offshore and use boats to transport passengers to and from the island). From shore you can either take a donkey ride or ride a funicular (cable) railway car up to the town (the capital city, Fira).
There is a bus service available to both the village of Oia and the Akrotiri excavation site (be sure to check that the site is open to the public prior to going), and there are taxis also available. It is recommended that you agree on a price for a taxi prior to departing.
