Overview

Nice, located in southern France, along the Mediterranean is a leading tourist destination. It is one of cities in the French Riviera (one of the world's most popular resort areas). Nice also happens to be one of the oldest human settlements in the world.

Being a part of the fabulous French Riviera, while in Nice you may have the opportunity to travel to the nearby glitzy French cities of St. Tropez and Cannes (home of the famous Cannes Film Festival), as well as the upscale Principality of Monaco.

The temperatures in Nice are usually mild throughout the year, with very moderate rainfall. January and February are the coldest months of the year, while July and August are the hottest months of the year.

There are a very limited number of cruises offered departing from Nice, and those that do are usually only luxury lines. However, Nice is often included by the mainstream cruise industry on many of their Mediterranean cruise itineraries.

Currency
The official currency is the Euro. ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using. ATM machines will usually give you a better exchange rate than a bank or hotel. Using a credit card is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language of France is French. However, in the tourist areas many people will speak English. Don't count on everyone being able to speak English though!

Tourist Attractions
The Place MassÚna is the main square in Nice. It is surrounded by main buildings of Italian architecture. This square is the location of many of the city's public events and gatherings, such as concerts and festivals.

The Promenade des Anglais is a famous promenade in Nice, also simply called the Promenade or La Prom. During the day you'll see many families walking along the Promenade, as well as many bicyclists. The Hotel Negresco, opened in 1912, is located along the Promenade. It is a palatial hotel that is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

There are many museums in the city of Nice. Among them are the Museum of Natural History, the Musée Chagall and the Museum of Asian Art.

The Nice Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Nice that is the seat of the Bishop of Nice. This cathedral is dedicated to the patron saint of Nice, Saint Reparata.

Being one of the popular tourist destinations along the French Riviera, throughout the year there are many festivals that take place in Nice, such as the Carnaval de Nice.

Port Location
The cruise port is located about a 30-minute walk from the town center, so many attractions are nearby. Taxis are available at the port for those that would rather not walk.

As mentioned above, another option is to travel to one of the other popular nearby French cities, such as St. Tropez and Cannes, or to Monte Carlo (in Monaco). The distance between Nice and St. Tropez is about 65 miles. It can take about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get there, but it can be much longer if there's a lot of traffic (which is common during the high season). Nice is only about 16 miles from Cannes, about 30 minutes (depending on traffic). Nice is just about 9 miles away from Monaco, about a 15 to 20 minute drive (depending on traffic).
