Overview

Located at the foot of the Maritme Alps, Monte Carlo is one of the most popular (and expensive) tourist attractions in all of Europe. Monte Carlo is especially well known for its casinos, its glamour, and for being a place to see celebrities. In fact, many of the residents are quite wealthy. This city is usually the site of various poker, racing and fashion events.

Only upscale cruise lines depart from Monte Carlo. Other cruise lines will dock (or tender) in Villefranche or Nice, enabling you to take a transfer, via car or train, to Monte Carlo (if you choose to do so).

Mediterranean
Western Europe

Currency
The official currency of Monaco is the Euro. There are many ATMs available in Monte Carlo. Using a credit card is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language of Monaco is French. However, many people fluently speak Italian and English as well.

Tourist Attractions
Without a doubt, the Monte Carlo Casino is the most famous tourist attraction in Monte Carlo. The Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo is also popular, as it's the home of various opera and ballet performances.

Many of the popular attractions in the area are actually located just outside of Monte Carlo, in Monaco-Ville (also known as Old Town). Including in these attractions is the Monaco Cathedral (also known as Saint Nicholas Cathedral), where Grace Kelley was buried.

Other attractions in the Old Town are the Napoleon Museum and the Oceanographic Museum. The Oceanographic Museum is a beautiful building located right on a cliff, housing a nice collection of various sea creatures (such as starfish, turtles, sharks and rays). There is an aquarium in the basement of this museum.

The Princely Palace (the official residence of the Prince of Monaco) is also located in Monaco-Ville. Some parts of the palace are open to the public during the summer, and the courtyard of the palace has been the site of numerous concerts over the years.

Port Location
Monte Carlo's cruise port is located in the Port of Monaco (also known as Port Hercules), not too far from the Princely Palace. There's not much to do at the pier. The city of Monte Carlo is about a mile away from the pier, while Monaco-Ville is even closer.
