Overview

Lisbon is Portugal's largest city and capital, and is actually the most western capital city of Europe's mainland. This is a historic city that is rich in architecture, including Romanesque, Gothic, Modern, Baroque, and various other styles. Lisbon is one of the cities that claim to be built on seven hills (like Rome and Istanbul).

Lisbon is often included on various European cruise itineraries, and is also a cruise departure port for many of the world's major cruise lines (see below for details).

The temperature in Lisbon is quite mild. The spring is typically cool to warm, while the summer is mostly sunny, dry and hot. The fall months are mild, and the winter is usually rainy, windy and cool.

Currency
The official currency of Portugal is the Euro. Other currency is not readily accepted. ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using. ATM machines will usually give you a better exchange rate than a bank or hotel. Using a credit card is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language of Portugal is Portuguese. However, most of the locals in the tourist areas will speak English. There are also many Spanish speakers throughout the city.

Tourist Attractions
The downtown area of the city, known as the Baixa district, is the city centre and heart of Lisbon. Not surprisingly, it is the main tourist area too. There is a lot of sightseeing and shopping that can be done in this area.

There are quite a few museums in Lisbon, the most famous of which include the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (the National Museum of Ancient Art), the Lisbon Oceanarium, the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, and the Berardo Collection Museum.

The Castle of São Jorge is the Castle of Lisbon. It is located on the highest hill in the city and is one of the main tourist sites in Lisbon.

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha is located in the center of Lisbon, in the Baixa district. It is one of the city's last remaining buildings of Manueline style. The present church is a reconstruction of the original, which was damaged in an 18th century earthquake and tsunami.

Bairro Alto is an area in Lisbon that is very popular among the young nightlife-seeking crowd. There are many bars and clubs in this area. You'll find a mix of tourists and locals throughout this part of the city. This area is considered to be Lisbon's home to its hip hop, heavy metal music, reggae, Goth, gay, and punk scenes.

Belém is a historic section of Lisbon, where the Belém Palace is located. The Belém Palace is the former home of the Portugese royalty and is now home to the President of Portugal. The Belém Tower is another famous attraction in this area. Built in the early 16th century, this tower is one of the symbols of the city and is often pictured in many of Portugal's tourist advertisements.

Gare do Oriente is one of Lisbon's main transportation hubs (for trains, buses and taxis). It is a beautiful sight to see, during the day or at night.

Port Location
The Port of Lisbon is pretty close to the city's downtown area (only about a 2 mile distance). The Lisbon Airport (LIS), also known as Portela Airport, is not too far from the cruise terminal either.
