Overview

Dubrovnik is a historic city located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, in southern Croatia. Once the site of attacks (during the early 1990's wars), Dubrovnik is now a very free and peaceful city. This city is a cultural center that hosts many musical, theater and art events throughout the year. There's a lot to do in this city, including sunning at the beach, shopping and strolling through the old city and taking nature walks.

The climate in Dubrovnik is a typical Mediterranean one. There are mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. This area is actually well known for having a decent amount of wind and thunderstorms. The most comfortable temperatures usually occur in the Spring and Fall, as the Summer can be quite hot.

There are a very limited number of "small ship" cruise lines that use Dubrovnik as a cruise departure port, as this beautiful city is more commonly one of the ports of call on a European cruise itinerary.

Currency
The official currency is the Kuna (HRK). ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using. ATM machines will usually give you a better exchange rate than a bank or hotel. Using a credit card is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language of Croatia is Croatian. However, you'll find a decent number of people that speak some English in the tourist areas. There are also many people that are fluent in German.

Tourist Attractions
The Placa is the main street of the old city. Many popular shops are located along this street. The old city is composed of many narrow pedestrian-only streets (like Venice) that are filled with various boutiques, some of which offer quite unique items for sale. Some of the more popular items to purchase in Dubrovnik include jewelry, lace, leather and ceramics. A popular excursion in Dubrovnik is a walking tour of the old city.

Dubrovnik has a lot to offer the more adventurous tourist. For instance, popular activities available include climbing its steep hills, hiking, and swimming in the beautiful sea off of one of the city's picturesque beaches. Banja is a very popular beach in Dubrovnik.

The was a earthquake in 1667 that destroyed many of the historic buildings, but a few still remain. Among them are Sponza Palace, which is currently used to house the National Archives. The Rector's Palace is a Gothic structure that functions today as a museum. St. Blaise's church is the most popular church in Dubrovnik, as it was built (in the 1700's) in honor of the city's patron saint.

One of Dubrovnik's most recognizable features is the wall that runs (2 kilometers) around the city, which used to function for protection of the city. Today it is just a beautiful sight to see, and you can walk along it if you like. Be warned - it's a steep climb in some areas, with quite a few steps.

Port Location
Larger cruise ships dock in the port of Gruz, about a 10 minute taxi ride into the old city area of Dubrovnik. Most of the major cruise lines will offer a free shuttle service into the center of the city, which takes about 15 minutes. Depending on how busy the port is, you may have to tender, as there is very limited space at the pier for large cruise ships to fit. Smaller ships may dock in the Old Harbor, located right in the heart of the old city.
