Overview

One of the fastest growing cities in the Caribbean, Ocho Rios is a city in the island of Jamaica that is very popular among tourists. Jamaica is considered a part of the Western Caribbean, and Ocho Rios is included as a port of call on quite a few cruises.

Ocho Rios is particularly popular for its snorkeling, scuba diving, beaches, dining options, night life, all-inclusive resorts and it's various exotic natural attractions (such as Dunn's River Falls - see below for more details).

Destinations
Ocho Rios is included on several Western Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Cruise Lines Departing Here

Ocho Rios is not a cruise departure port.

Currency
The official currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican Dollar (JMD). ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using. ATM machines will usually give you a better exchange rate than a hotel. Using a credit card is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language of Jamaica is English, spoken with a very distinct regional accent. In addition to that, Jamaican Patois is a second language that is spoken by many of the locals.

Tourist Attractions
Ocho Rios is the home of Dunn's River Falls, a famous waterfall that falls directly into the Caribbean Sea. It's popular to climb up the falls, and it's not as hard to do as it sounds.

Dolphin Cove is located right next to Dunn's River Falls. It's a popular tourist attraction where you can interact with (and even swim with) dolphins, sharks and stingrays. There is a minimum age requirement for children to be allowed to be pulled by dolphins in the water, so check on that prior to going if it's a concern for you. If your child isn't allowed to participate, they'll still be able to touch the dolphins. If you decide to visit this very popular area, be sure to plan to be there for at least a few hours.

Mallards Beach is a typically crowded beach that is located close to the center of town. If you're looking for a beach party, this is the beach for you. It is usually filled with people that just got off a cruise ship, as well as various other tourists. James Bond Beach, located in Oracabessa, is a less crowded alternative to the beaches closer to town. Various reggae concerts are hosted there during the year.

Some of Jamaica's best resorts are located nearby Ocho Rios. Included among them are Sandals Dunn's River Villagio Golf Resort and Spa, Couples Sans Souci and Couples Ocho Rios. Many of the all-inclusive resorts in Ocho Rios offer a day pass for purchase, for those that would like to spend time at one of the properties.

There are many good restaurants (including upscale options such as the French restaurant Café Aubergine and the very pricey La Papillion at the Royal Plantation), as well as a great night scene, in Ocho Rios. In addition to that, many people enjoy various water sports while in Ocho Rios. In particular, snorkeling and scuba diving are very popular. A popular shore excursion offered by many cruise lines is a wilderness ATV tour.

Coyaba River Gardens is the home to beautiful tropical gardens with a museum, showcasing various artifacts.
A tour of the gardens takes about an hour to complete.

Port Location
The cruise ships dock right in downtown Ocho Rios, making it quite convenient for arriving cruisers to walk right into town. If you end up taking a taxi, be sure that it's a legally licensed taxi. Montego Bay, another popular city in Jamaica, is about a two hour drive from Ocho Rios.
