Overview

Key West is an island located in the Florida Keys, as it's a part of the United States state of Florida. In fact, Key West is the southernmost city in the continental United States.

This is a very colorful, loose and exciting place to visit. From its beautiful beaches to its nightly (yes, nightly) celebrations, Key West is a fun destination that is featured on many Western Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Key West is not a cruise departure port.

Currency
The official currency is the U.S. Dollar (USD). ATM machines are available, but make sure you use one that works with the card you're using. ATM machines will usually give you a better exchange rate than a hotel. Using a credit card is a great way to avoid having to exchange currency.

Language
The official language is English.

Tourist Attractions
Key West is very much a walking town, as just about everything that a tourist would be interested is in a compact area.

"Old Town" is the original Key West neighborhood. Major tourist areas within this area include Duval Street, Mallory Square, the Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor.

The central business district is primarily located on Duval Street, a famous commercial downtown street in Key West. Along this street you'll find many of Key West's most famous restaurants, such as Sloppy Joe's, The Bull and Whistle, Irish Kevin's Bar and Rick's Cafe. On many nights there is a carnival held on Duval Street that lasts until very late at night.

Mallory Square is located on the waterfront in the heart of the Old Town portion Key West. This is the location of the "Sunset Celebration," one of the main tourist attractions in Key West. This celebration begins about two hours before sunset (daily) and includes various street performers, food carts and arts and crafts exhibitors.

New Town is where you'll find many shopping stores and malls, schools and the Key West International Airport.

Port Location
There are a few cruise ports in Key West. Most cruise ships dock at either Mallory Square or the Truman Annex. When those two docks are crowed the cruise ships may dock at the old Navy base (outside of town). If the cruise terminals are very busy your ship may have to anchor offshore and use tenders to transport passangers back and forth. The tenders will take you right into Old Town.
