Overview Castaway Cay, formerly known as Gorda Cay, is Disney Cruise Line's "private island." The Walt Disney Company owns the island, making it so that only Disney cruise ships visit this island. Castaway Cay is actually a part of the Bahamas.
The port day in Castaway Cay is a highlight of a Disney cruise. This is because it's an excellent opportunity to just relax and enjoy a fun day at the beach. Beach towels are usually handed out as you're disembarking the ship, so that's one less thing for you to worry about bringing with you off the ship.
Destinations Castaway Cay is included on several Bahamas and Caribbean cruise itineraries, exclusively by Disney Cruise Line.
Cruise Lines Departing Here
Castaway Cay is not a cruise departure port.
Currency The official currency of the Bahamas is the Bahamian Dollar (BSD); however, the shops in Castaway Cay will only accept your cruise card for payment purposes (excluding the post office, where cash is needed). This makes it so that anything you purchase is charged to your onboard account.
Language The official language of the Bahamas is English.
Tourist Attractions Castaway Cay's main beach is called Castaway Family Beach. It's the most popular area of the island. It's about a 15-minute walk from the ship to the beach. If you'd like to avoid the walk, there's a tram service available to quicken the trip there. There is a rental shop for various water sports, as well as a zip line.
There are usually two buffets offered by the cruise line on the island. There are typically various BBQ items, (such as burgers, franks, chicken and steak) and well as salads, fruit and other items.
Many people like to rent bicycles while on the island, making it quite easy to get from place to place. The island has a few trails to ride on. There is a post office on the island for those that want to mail a postcard to someone. This is one of the few places that you actually need cash for, as the cruise cards aren't accepted in the post office.
Serenity Bay is a quiet adults only area, a nice option for those looking for a little "alone time." You have to be at least 18 years old to enter this area. Castaway Air Bar is a great place to relax at this part of the island. There is also a teen beach, a great place for teens to swim, snorkel, tan and kayak. Scuttle's Cove is a kids area where they can crawl through barrels and even participate in an excavation.
Also located on this island is the Flying Dutchman, a pirate ship from the popular Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Port Location Tendering is not required at this private island, as cruise ships are able to dock right at a pier. This allows passengers to get right on and off their ship to enjoy themselves as quickly as possible.
