In very exciting news today, Royal Caribbean announced that they have taken delivery of Oasis of the Seas from STX Europe in Turku, Finland. This comes after six years of planning and building, so it's definitely a major event. This massive vessel is the largest cruise ship in the world, 40% larger than the currently largest in the world Freedom Class ships of Royal Caribbean's fleet (which are Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas). In fact, Royal Caribbean is billing Oasis as the Seas as the "world's largest and most revolutionary cruise ship."
Oasis of the Seas will be debuting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 and will be departing from Finland on Friday, October 30, 2009. Oasis of the Seas will feature a slew of new attractions, many of which have never been on a cruise ship before. Among the highlights of this ship will be an aquatic amphitheater (called the AquaTheater), a zip line that is located nine decks above an open-air atrium, a carousel and multilevel urban-style loft suites. Oasis of the Seas will feature a neighborhood concept, which will include seven themed areas to allow guests to go to an area of the ship that best matches their preferences and/or mood. The neighborhoods are: Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone.
ABC's "Good Morning America" will be broadcasting live aboard Oasis of the Seas on November 20, 2009, welcoming her to Fort Lauderdale. They will be giving the world a first look at this impressive vessel. The official naming ceremony for this ship is scheduled to take place on November 30, 2009, during a one-night inaugural celebration-fundraiser to benefit the non-profit Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tickets for this special event will begin at $750 per person. The official inaugural sailing of Oasis of the Seas will be departing on December 5, 2009.
Oasis of the Seas will homeport from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and will be doing 7-night Caribbean cruises year round.
