As a move to become even more "green," Princess Cruises has announced that Island Princess helped inaugurate the new shore power facility at the Port of Vancouver. The ship's engine was turned off and the ship was "plugged in" to the clean hydroelectric power provided by this new facility. This amazing technology (also known as "cold ironing") allows properly equipped ships to reduce their emissions while docked in Vancouver, by using the power from the city's grid rather than by running their diesel-powered engines.
"We've been committed to shore power for many years, so we're pleased we can now 'plug in' our ships at Port Metro Vancouver," said Charlie Ball, president of Princess Tours. "We know that local air quality issues are important to the community, and we're proud to join with all those involved in realizing this important environmental initiative."
Vancouver has become the world's third port where Princess Cruises' ships can utilize this more environmentally friendly technology. This program debuted for Princess Cruises in the summer of 2001, in Juneau, Alaska, and expanded to Seattle in 2005. Among the cities planning to follow suit are Los Angeles and San Francisco. Currently, nine of Princess' ships are equipped to accept power from such facilities. The Princess cruise ships currently featuring this technology are Coral Princess, Dawn Princess, Diamond Princess, Golden Princess, Island Princess, Sapphire Princess, Sea Princess, Star Princess and Sun Princess. |
