Royal Caribbean Passengers Injured During Shore Excursion
Yesterday, 49 passengers of Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas were involved in an accident when their tour bus got into an accident in St. Thomas. This happened while the passengers were on what Royal Caribbean calls the "Pirate Duck Adventure" shore excursion. The boat-like bus (made for traveling in water and on land) reportedly slowly veered off of the road.
29 of the 49 passengers were taken to the hospital, but only 9 of them sustained non-life threatening injuries. Cynthia Martinez, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean, said that all but one of the 9 passengers returned to the ship before it set sail from Saint Thomas on Wednesday. The ship stayed in port past its scheduled departure time, as it waited for these passengers to return to the ship from the hospital. The one injured passenger that stayed ashore was a woman that sustained an ankle injury, and whose husband (who was not injured during the accident, but was on this excursion) also stayed ashore with her. She is expected to return to the U.S. by airplane today.
"Our thoughts are with our guests that were involved in this unfortunate accident," Royal Caribbean President and CEO Adam Goldstein was quoted as saying regarding this unfortunate event. He went on to say that "The safety and well-being of our guests is our highest priority, and we will continue to do our very best to assist them."
Freedom of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's three Freedom Class vessels. She is currently completing a 7-night Caribbean itinerary that sails round trip from Port Canaveral, Florida.
