Early or Late Dining - Which is Better?

I've never cruised before and as of right now I've picked late dining, because I usually eat later in the day anyway. However, I wanted to see what people thought in general about it. Is it better to dine earlier so that you can see all of the shows?

Most ships, especially the big Royal Caribbean ones will have a show for the early and late seating, that way nobody misses out by going to dinner at a certain seating. However, I would prefer second seating myself so that I make sure that I have enough time in each port and don't have to worry about rushing back to the ship to make it in time for dinner.

I prefer early dining myself. I suppose I'm used to eating earlier in the day, so 6 - 6:30 is perfect for me.
